Living well

Small, steady changes make the biggest difference. Here is what matters most, and what to ask your own team about.

Day to day

What helps

Food

Cut down on salt. Ready meals, tinned food and restaurant food are usually where most of it comes from. If you have been given a specific diet plan by your team, follow that plan rather than general advice.

Fluid

Some people need to limit how much they drink, others do not. Ask your own team what applies to you, because the answer changes with your stage of kidney disease and your treatment.

Movement

Regular activity helps your blood pressure, your weight and your mood. Walking counts. Start with what you can manage and build up.

Medicines

Take what you are prescribed, and tell your doctor about anything else you take, including painkillers, supplements and herbal remedies. Some of these affect the kidneys.

Fasting

If you are thinking about fasting during Ramadan, speak with your kidney team first. EMANT has contributed to consensus recommendations on this, and your team can advise on what is safe for you.

Heat

In the UAE summer, dehydration is easy. Ask your team how much you should drink in hot weather, because the right answer depends on your treatment.

This information is general. It does not replace advice from your own doctor. If you are worried about your kidneys, speak to a healthcare professional.
