Your kidneys, explained

Your kidneys clean your blood. When they stop working properly, you often cannot feel it. That is why testing matters.

What your kidneys do

You have two kidneys, one on each side of your back, just below your ribs. They filter waste and extra water out of your blood, keep your blood pressure steady, and help keep your bones strong. Most people can feel well with kidneys working at well under half their normal strength, which is why a test is the only reliable way to know.
